Migrant agricultural workers make up roughly one in 5 farm labourers in Canada. They are crucial to Canadian agriculture, but they are often excluded and disadvantaged when it comes to issues that affect their health, safety, employment and belonging. This is what motivates our team to study research supports available to this population, with the ultimate goal of helping to create a society that is more supportive of this population.
Our project, PRESMA, stands for Partnered Research Evaluating Services with Migrants in Agriculture.
We are a team of academics, clinicians, service leaders and stakeholders who are. interested in better documenting the supports and services available for migrant agricultural workers, and, building awareness and actions that can help extend and improve services for migrant agricultural workers.
We employ a community-based approach in partnership with both community organizations and migrant agricultural workers. Our project consists of 2 years of data collection, analysis and planning with an emphasis on generating consensus and solutions that can be implemented along the way.
Our focus is three regions of Southern Ontario with a high-density population of migrant agricultural workers: Windsor-Essex, Haldimand-Norfolk and Niagara. Looking at three distinct regions will help us understand both the nuances and common strategies in how services and supports can be offered to this population.
